Democratic Republic of Congo
Two men, who are likely ex-militia combatants, in a village where they have found refuge among displaced civilians as the countryside burns nearby. Locals claim that the Mai Mai militias hiding in the mountains set the countryside ablaze to prevent government forces from using the bush as cover for their attacks against them. The region has been severely effected by fighting between government forces and Mai Mai militias. Over 1200 people die everyday in the RD Congo, largely due to preventable diseases such as malaria, malnutrition and tuberculosis, a direct consequence of the country's conflict and decades of kleptocratic dictatorship.?Kina, Democratic Republic of Congo. 17/06/2006.?Photo © J.B.
