Iraqi Kurdistan
Hamida Hassan and her son. Hamida's husband and the father of her son was taken away by Iraqi forces during Saddam Hussein's "Anfal" campaign in 1987. In 1988 the regime used chemical weapons against her village killing some 5000 people. She was severely effected and evacuated to Tehran from where she was sent to Norway for treatment. After she began to recover she was offered political asylum, but refused in order to return and find her young son. Today they have returned to their village, but Hamida still suffers from chronic respiratory, skin and eye troubles...Halabja, Iraqi Kurdistan. 20/11/2002...Photo © J.B. Russell
