DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
A man attempts to protect the thatched roof of his home as the bush burns around his village in the south eastern province of Katanga. Locals claim that Mai Mai militias hiding in the mountains set the countryside ablaze to prevent government forces from using the bush as cover for their attacks against them. Hunters also use the fires to drive animals into the open. The region has been severely effected by fighting between government forces and Mai Mai militias. Over 1200 people die everyday in the RD Congo, largely due to preventable diseases such as malaria, malnutrition and tuberculosis, a direct consequence of the country's conflict and decades of kleptocratic dictatorship..Kina, Democratic Republic of Congo. 17/06/2006.
