Vladimir, a coal miner, in his home with a portrait of Josef Stalin on the wall. He lives in a sprawing neighborhood where many miners live near the mines in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian coal miners went on strike for political change at the Kremlin, contributing to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Although on strike, some coal miners must continue to descend into the mine to conduct maintenance operations to prevent gas buildup and accidents.
