BURKINA FASO
Farmers in Tanlili practice two techniques to prepare the land against erosion: the "zai" and small dikes. The dikes are traced along the level line in order to prevent rainwater from rapidly flowing off the land to the temporary rivers that run across the savana during the rainy season. "Zai" is an ancient Mossi technique that had fallen out of use and was recovered by the UNGVT (Union Namanegbzanga des groupements villageois). It consists of making small, regularly distanced crators which slow the evacuation of rain water from the fields and directs the water toward the seeds to be germinated..Tanlili, Burkina Faso. 08/06/2004.Photo © J.B.
