BURKINA FASO
Farmers collectively practicing the "Zai" technique: an ancient Mossi technique that had fallen out of use until it was revivied by the UNGVT (Union Namanegbzanga des Groupements villageois). It consist of digging circular holes with a pickaxe at regular distances to slow the evacuation of rain water from the fields and to direct the water toward the seeds to be germinated. In each cavity are placed cereal grains, white and red sorgho, millet and corn, the staple foodstuff of the region. Cereals are rotated with vegetables, beans and peanuts..Tanlili, Burkina Faso. 09/06/2004.Photo © J.B. Russell
