Begag was minister for equal opportunities in the government of Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin (Union for a Popular Movement, UMP) until April 5, 2007. He resigned to support the UDF (Union pour la Démocratie Française) moderate centrist candidate François Bayrou, the only UMP minister to do so.
