Iraqi refugees who have been settling in the Detroit area over the past few years occupy a large majority of the apartment units in the housing complex. Although many of the refugees have family and cultural ties to Detroit, the city is one of the most economically devastated urban centers in the country. Assistance is inadequate and finding jobs, housing, transportation and building a new life after years of violence and exile are difficult for many Iraqi refugees.
