EU Immigration
A boat load of illegal immigrants, for the most part Iraqi Kurds and North Africans, is escorted into port by Italian Coast Guard patrol boats. The immigrants depart from Tunisia, sail into Italian waters around it's Mediterranean islands and make an SOS call. According to international maritime regulations, the Italian authorities are obliged to accompany them to the nearest port which is the gateway to the open borders of Europe..Lampadusa, Italy. 09/1998.Photo © J.B.
