Mauritania
A woman from the Guiraye cooperative holds vegetables harvested from the their garden. An irrigation project has allowed the cooperative to thrive despite the severe droughts and erratic rains caused by climate change and global warming that have had devastating effects on the Sahel in recent years. The fruits and vegetables cultivated by the cooperative improve the nutritional in-take of the community, reduce hunger and generate much needed revenue for the women of the cooperative. The income from the sale of surplus produce empowers the women and gives them a larger say in community decisions, traditionally dominated by men.
