Climate Change in West Africa

A family navigates along tidal channels through the mangroves in a traditional wooden pirogue. The coastal mangroves of Guinea Bissau and southern Senegal are some of the most important in Africa. Rising sea levels and drought due to global warming and climate change are causing the salinization of the complex mangrove ecosystem with adverse affects on the fauna and flora of the region. Mangroves harbor an extraordinary amount of bio mass and are exceptional carbon sinks.
