DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
A girl returning to her village as the countryside burns in the south eastern province of Katanga. Locals claim that Mai Mai militias hiding in the mountains start the fires to prevent government forces from using the bush as cover for their attacks against them. The region has been severely effected by fighting between government forces and Mai Mai militias. Over 1200 people die everyday in the RD Congo, largely due to preventable diseases such as malaria, malnutrition and tuberculosis, a direct consequence of the country's conflict and decades of kleptocratic dictatorship.
