DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
Displaced men, some of whom may be ex-militias, in a village where they have found refuge as the countryside burns nearby. Locals claim that Mai Mai militias hiding in the mountains set the countryside ablaze to prevent government forces from using the bush as cover for their attacks against them. The region has been severely affected by fighting between government forces and Mai Mai militias. Over 1200 people die everyday in the RD Congo due largely to preventable diseases such as malaria, malnutrition and tuberculosis, a direct consequence of the country's conflict and decades of kleptocratic dictatorship.
