Mauritania
A woman pounding millet in a village in Gorgol province. In order to produce enough food to sustain communities through the long dry seasons in the Western Sahel, agricultural activities depend on the cycles of seasonal rains. Global warming and climate change have caused rainy seasons to fail, erratic rains when they do come and prolonged drought in recent years, exacerbating food insecurity, hunger and poverty in the region.
