In the village of al-Abarra, north of Baghdad, there are three families with children who were born congenitally blind. Ataalla Mohamed, a veteran of the Gulf War has four children. His oldest son, born before the war, was born healthy with perfect vision. All three of his younger children, born after the war, were born with congenital blindness. Ataalla Mohamed served in an infantry unit and came under repeated and heavy bombardment.al-Abarra, Iraq.Photo © J.B. Russell
